Glenkinchie 12 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the Lowlands region, bottled at 43% ABV, showcasing the light and floral style characteristic of this part of Scotland. The Glenkinchie distillery lies in East Lothian, a dozen or so kilometres from Edinburgh, which is why it is sometimes referred to as The Edinburgh Malt.

The distillery belongs to Diageo and represents the Lowlands in the Classic Malts series. It is the 12 Year Old that serves as the core, regular single malt release from this distillery. Glenkinchie has always worked with two stills, among the largest in Scotland. This scale, combined with the design of the still neck, encourages high reflux and yields a light, delicate spirit. Other distinctive features of the plant are the Oregon pine washbacks and the cooling of the spirit in a cast-iron worm tub.

Maturation is based on ex-bourbon casks and refill American oak casks. A cask policy focused on bourbon barrels and refill American oak preserves the orchard fruitiness and grassy freshness of the spirit. The mild and moderate climate of East Lothian gives maturation a gentler character than coastal or island locations, with smaller fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

On the nose the whisky is delicate and floral. A light, aromatic nose with accents of malted barley, almonds, hazelnuts, as well as manuka honey and beeswax. On the palate, fruit leads the way. A very fruity palate with a blend of stewed fruits, dessert wines, apple peel and honey, turning oaky in the later stages. A medium-length finish, with barley and freshly cut grass. The whole remains dry, light and crisp.

Glenkinchie 12 has earned several industry accolades. Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2016, as well as the title of Best Lowland Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards in 2013, 2014 and 2016. It is a single malt often served as an aperitif.
