Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2023 is a dry red wine from the Marlborough appellation in New Zealand, built around the Pinot Noir grape in a silky and fruity style. The fruit comes from the Southern Valleys, a subregion south of the Wairau Valley. The grapes were sourced from the southern side of the Wairau Valley, encompassing the Brancott, Fairhall and Ben Morven subregions, as well as from the Barracks vineyard located in the Omaka Valley. The soils are ancient alluvial gravels, relatively well-draining, with some clay content. This soil structure gives the vines relatively steady access to water through the summer months and limits water stress.
The grapes are destemmed and go into open fermentation vats with wild yeasts. A portion of whole clusters is added to build structure. After pressing, the wine matures in French oak barrels for 11 months. The result is an elegant, complex and fine-boned wine, an expression of the Marlborough soils and Cloudy Bay's vision. The brand has a long history here: David Hohnen and Kevin Judd first planted Pinot Noir vines in 1989, and the first vintage of Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir was released after several trials in 1994.
On the nose, the wine shows a fruity, summery character. An aromatic and enticing nose, of distinctly summery character, with scents of strawberry and cherry alongside a note of vanilla and toast. The palate is immediately bright and concentrated. Notes of sun-ripened Victoria plums, strawberry and cherry, the whole enlivened by currant acidity. Vinous critics describe the vintage similarly: a wine that is lively yet creamy, in which the primary fruit of plum and red cherry meets oak-derived spice, tobacco and cedar, and despite its ripeness retains a refreshing freshness.
