Cloudy Bay Pinot noir 2022 is a dry red wine from Marlborough on New Zealand's South Island, built around a silky structure and crisp acidity. It is made from the Pinot noir grape. The fruit comes from the cool, clay soils and gentle, north-facing slopes of the Southern Valleys region in Marlborough, where aged alluvial gravels and dense clay subsoil balance drainage and water availability; the key parcels are the Mustang, Delta and Barracks vineyards.

The wine is produced by a house founded in Marlborough. Cloudy Bay was established in 1985, and its first Sauvignon blanc earned international acclaim; in 1990 it joined Veuve Clicquot, and in 2003 it became part of the LVMH group. In the vinification of Pinot noir, the house uses open fermentation vats, after which the wine matures in French oak barrels. Fermentation is carried out in open vats for 24 to 28 days, after which the wine is aged in barrels for 11 months, of which one third are new French oak barrels and two thirds used barrels.

In the glass, the wine opens fruity and aromatic. On the nose it is open and expressive, with notes of wild hedgerow fruits, crushed rose petals and sun-warmed red cherry; the palate is finely balanced, with silky tannins and a clean touch of acidity framing a core of summer berry fruits, gentle spice and a hint of sponge-cake vanilla, while the finish is long.

Critics highlight the approachable, light profile of the 2022 vintage. Rebecca Gibb MW describes this wine as supple, round-shouldered and satisfying, with juicy tannins and gently refreshing acidity giving it ease; she also notes that it is not the most deeply coloured or aromatically richest Pinot noir, which she attributes to the character of the season. Erin Larkin points to a creamy and savoury character with notes of macerated strawberry, sumac and emerging oak, along with abundant, chalky tannins; the wine is sealed under screw cap, at 13.5% alcohol.
