Auchentoshan Sauvignon Blanc is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky in an exceptional, limited edition that brings together two worlds – Scottish distillation and French winemaking. It's a unique marriage of Auchentoshan's smooth, triple-distilled character with the aromas of Sauvignon Blanc casks, offering a fresh, vibrant take on whisky from the Auchentoshan distillery; the new malt is matured in bourbon casks and finished in Sauvignon Blanc Barrique casks.

The Auchentoshan distillery lies near Glasgow and is one of the few in Scotland to consistently employ triple distillation. Auchentoshan is a distillery on the outskirts of Glasgow that has been operating since 1823, producing triple-distilled whisky. Passing the spirit through the stills three times results in the smooth, light and delicate style of this dram. Released in 2019 in the United Kingdom, this limited edition is a spirit matured first in bourbon casks and then in Sauvignon Blanc wine barriques – and not just any barriques, as Auchentoshan sourced casks from Bordeaux to create this expression.

Maturation takes place in two stages. Auchentoshan Sauvignon Blanc matures in bourbon casks and is finished in Sauvignon Blanc Barrique casks. This finish lends the spirit an added dimension of fruity freshness. The higher strength intensifies the bright notes of citrus and sweet apple and lengthens the finish.

On the nose and palate the whisky comes across as crisp and fruity. The nose offers subtle citrus notes of white grapefruit with a slight sweetness of white peach and green apple, plus a light scent of wild rose, honeysuckle, gorse and jasmine. The palate is slightly peppery, with lively notes, green grapes, a touch of acacia honey and lemon curd, the sweetness of vanilla, lychee and honeydew melon, along with notes of dry grass and hay. The finish is hot and peppery, with lingering notes of custard apple and a slightly saline sensation in the mouth.

The serving style is key here and unusual for a single malt. The brand states that this whisky tastes best chilled. This Auchentoshan Single Malt was designed to be served chilled; maturation in a combination of bourbon and Sauvignon Blanc casks yields vibrant notes of citrus and apple, toasted vanilla and buttery oak, and the dram is best served straight from the fridge or from an ice bucket, and is well worth trying in Highball and Spritz cocktails. It's a proposition for warmer days, perfect for sharing among friends.
