Whyte & Mackay Special is a blended Scotch whisky from Glasgow, whose hallmark is triple maturation. The brand was born out of the partnership between James Whyte and Charles Mackay, and Whyte and Mackay traces its roots back to 1844 in Glasgow.

The blend brings together single malts and grain whiskies from two Scottish regions. The process begins with the selection of matured single malts and matured grain whiskies from two of Scotland's most famous regions, Highland and Speyside, after which the malt whisky and the grain whisky are matured separately. What sets this blend apart from most blended whiskies is an additional stage: most blended whiskies stop at this point, but Whyte and Mackay adds a further step – the final chapter of maturation is the marrying of these two different whiskies in sherry casks.

It is precisely this sherry cask finish that shapes the character and the colour. The triple maturation process yields a whisky rich in colour, with golden highlights, round and full on the nose, with smooth, rich flavours of honey and fruit. The nose reveals marzipan, Manuka honey, creamy caramel and Demerara sugar, with background notes of candied pineapple, cider apples and praline chocolate. The palate is led by vanilla and dried fruit, with a dry hint of pepper and a delicate note of oak, and the finish is of medium length.

The whisky is bottled at 40% ABV. The brand has been repeatedly awarded in industry competitions – it won a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge in 2022 and 2015. It works well neat, over ice and as a cocktail base, including in a Rusty Nail and an Old Fashioned.
