Johnnie Walker Black Ruby is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40% ABV, created as a fruity, sweeter variant inspired by the classic Black Label. It is the first permanent addition to the brand's core range developed by Emma Walker, the first woman to hold the position of master blender in Johnnie Walker's more than two-hundred-year history.
At the heart of its profile lies the selection of maturation casks. The blend was aged in ex-bourbon casks as well as in red wine casks seasoned with a combination of Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry. The producer indicates that Black Ruby includes whiskies from the Roseisle distillery, known for its rich, sweet and silky distillates. Production modifications were applied during the creation process: fermentation was carried out longer than usual to enhance the fruity notes, while during distillation copper contact was increased, removing the heavier fractions.
According to Whisky Advocate, the nose is distinctly jammy, with aromas of black cherry preserve, vanilla, caramel, pepper, tobacco, raisins and a hint of fresh oak, while the fruity, light palate delivers fresh fig, cherry, plum, spiced gingerbread biscuit, chocolate, caramel and smoke. The finish is filled with dried fruit and smoke. Compared with Black Label, the smokiness here is toned down, bringing the sweet, fruity core to the fore.
Black Ruby debuted globally in March 2025, having previously gone on sale in selected markets at the end of 2024. The whisky has joined Johnnie Walker's permanent range and is neither a limited edition nor a one-off release. The producer recommends it both neat and in cocktails such as the Old Fashioned or the signature Ruby Tonic with tonic water and blackberry preserve.
