Whyte & Mackay Special is a blended Scotch whisky, a marriage of malt and grain whiskies whose character is shaped by a proprietary triple maturation process. James Whyte and Charles Mackay traded whisky as merchants and ran bonded warehouses, and under the Whyte & Mackay Special name they introduced their own blended Scotch. The company's roots reach back to 1844 and the founding in Glasgow of Allan & Poynter, which James Whyte managed before entering into partnership with Charles Mackay in 1882.

The heart of this style is triple maturation. The secret of Whyte & Mackay's flavour lies in triple maturation and in a method of blending in which no single whisky dominates another; the starting point is the selection of matured single malts and matured grain whiskies from two Scottish regions – Highland and Speyside – after which the malt whisky is matured separately from the grain. Most blended whiskies end the process at this stage, but Whyte & Mackay adds an extra step: the final chapter of maturation is the marrying of both whiskies in sherry casks. The backbone of the blend is made up of Dalmore, Fettercairn, Tamnavulin and Jura distillates along with Invergordon grain whisky. The whisky is bottled at 40%.

In the glass a profile built around sweetness and fruit is revealed. Triple maturation gives a whisky rich in colour, with golden highlights, round and full on the nose, with silky, rich flavours of honey and fruit. The nose offers gentle, sweet cereals, caramel, honey, pralines, apples, plums and pineapples with a bouquet of dried flowers. The palate shows sweetness, vanilla, crème brûlée, baked apples, candied orange peel, maple syrup and a note of liquorice. The finish is not overly long, with notes of vanilla, white chocolate, confectionery and a trace of oak.

Whyte & Mackay Special remains a cornerstone of the brand's range. Today labelled "triple-matured", it is the best-selling blended whisky in Whyte & Mackay's core segment. As early as 1982 the brand was the seventh largest Scotch whisky brand on its home market with a 5 per cent share, and it still remains the most popular blended Scotch in Glasgow and western Scotland. The 0.2 l format corresponds to a single, handy serving.
