Torres 20, in full Torres Imperial 20 Hors d'Age, is a multi-award-winning Spanish brandy from the Catalan region of Penedès, with a deep, warm and decidedly spicy character. It is the most decorated brandy in the Torres portfolio, named for several years running the world's best brandy at competitions such as the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
Behind the distillate stands the Torres family, long associated with winemaking in the Penedès region. The Torres family has been producing Spanish brandy since 1928, and in the 1960s Miguel A. Torres began planting foreign varieties in his vineyards; he is credited with creating the first Spanish brandy made from the French Ugni Blanc variety. The contemporary bottle has a story of its own: in 2018 Torres Imperial 20 Hors d'Age was given a new look and is today presented in an elegant bottle inspired by a decanter that once belonged to Juan Torres Casals, the second generation of the Torres family, who created the first Torres brandy in 1928.
The brandy is made from two white varieties. As with Cognac, Armagnac and other grape brandies, a white wine is first produced — in this case from a blend of Ugni Blanc and the local Parellada variety, grown on the high slopes of Upper Penedès. The wine then undergoes double distillation in copper pot stills, after which the finest and most aromatic fractions are carefully selected and aged in barrels of French Limousin oak. It is worth emphasising how it differs from Andalusian styles: unlike Brandy de Jerez, which matures fractionally in the solera system, Torres Imperial 20 Hors d'Age is a statically aged brandy.
In the glass it is a mature and profound spirit. It has a noble, dark amber colour. The aroma is deep and warm, with traces of dried fruit and nuts, showing elegant notes of spice — vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate it is lush and buttery. Reviewers also note further nuances: the nose offers sultanas, fresh leather and a touch of apple cider, while the sweeter cask notes add a vanilla pod and a cigar box, alongside a dusting of cinnamon sugar and nutmeg.
It is best enjoyed neat, without additions, served after a meal, when you want to appreciate its oaky depth. It is worth pairing with dark chocolate, rich desserts or mature cheeses, to elevate an ordinary moment. It is also a solid base for classic brandy-based cocktails, where its pronounced spicy-oaky character balances intense ingredients well. Bottled at 38% ABV.
