Templeton Rye Caribbean Rum Cask Finish is an American straight rye whiskey from Iowa, finished in casks that previously held Jamaican dark rum, and the second instalment in the limited Barrel Finish Series. This is the second release in the limited Barrel Finish Series. The brand took straight rye aged for five years in American oak and then placed it in first-fill casks that had held Jamaican dark rum to complete its maturation.
Templeton Rye hails from Iowa, where the name refers to the whiskey produced during Prohibition. Templeton Rye, launched legally in 2006, traces its roots to the early 1920s, when the residents of Templeton distilled a much sought-after rye whiskey. It is worth noting the production realities behind this particular edition — all Templeton Rye product available for sale was distilled and aged in the state of Indiana, while blending and bottling took place at the distillery in Iowa.
The base is a rye with a high proportion of rye in the mash bill, matured for five years in new, charred American oak barrels. This limited straight rye whiskey was aged for five years in charred American oak barrels selected from the distillery's stocks. Once the barrels had been selected, the whiskey was finished in casks that previously held dark rum from Jamaica. An additional six months in first-fill Caribbean rum casks accentuates the rye spice, adding subtle exotic flavours and tropical fruit notes.
The profile is dominated by tropical fruit and the spicy structure of the rye. On the nose, ripe bananas, pineapples, aromatic spices and sweet oak. On the palate, creaminess, rich oak, orange peel, black pepper and dark chocolate. The finish brings sweet golden raisins and banana bread, fruit and wood.
This is a limited, collector's edition. The whiskey is bottled without chill filtration at 46% ABV. Templeton Rye Caribbean Rum Cask Finish is the second release in the brand's limited Barrel Finish Series. Available in the USA and selected international markets since autumn 2020.
