Talisker 8 Year Old is a single malt from the Isle of Skye, released as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2020 collection under the "Rare by Nature" theme and bottled at its natural cask strength of 57.9%. The spirit from the Isle of Skye dates from 2011 and matured in casks that previously held pot still–distilled Caribbean rum.

This edition stands out for the way it was matured. This 8-year-old release matured in casks that previously held pot still Caribbean rum – the first time this has been done in the distillery's history. The finish took place in casks that had held pot still–distilled Jamaican rum, adding further layers to the distillery's classic salty-peppery maritime notes. It was put together by master blender Dr Craig Wilson, and bottling took place without reduction with water, at cask strength.

On the nose, the rum cask character intertwines with Talisker's maritime profile. The sweet, smoky nose carries bananas, fudge-like toffee, sea breeze and black pepper, with candied orange and lemon wrapped in a cloud of sweet-and-salty peat smoke, followed by developing notes of overripe, roasted and grilled pineapple. The pot still rum cask comes through clearly, with its characteristic funky banana, coconut, molasses and vegetal sugar cane.

On the palate it reaches for fullness and pronounced smoke. The round, sweet body opens with a powerful hit of sharp peat smoke, tempered by baked apples and charred bananas, dusted with freshly ground black pepper and Maldon salt, while a pinch of chilli gives way to sweet-and-sour citrus: lemon, lime and Seville orange. Peppery stewed fruit and gentle wood smoke build an abundant palate, and the long finish is very prickly, with fruit-and-nut dark chocolate and chilli paste.
