St-Rémy VSOP is a French brandy in a delicate, well-balanced style, drawing on the diversity of French vineyards. One thing is worth clarifying at the outset: despite the proximity of the categories, St-Rémy is not a cognac but a French brandy that is 100% French in origin — from the grapes to the bottle. The VSOP expression has been bottled at 36% ABV.
The brand was founded in 1886 and today is positioned as the world's number one French brandy. The VSOP incarnation itself was introduced in 1980 and, according to the producer, embodies the iconic taste that made St-Rémy famous around the world. The composition of the distillates is the responsibility of Master Blender Cécile Roudaut, who handles the selection of the eaux-de-vie and oversees their maturation.
At its foundation lies a careful selection of wines from many French regions and grape varieties. The blend brings together such varieties as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Gamay, Ugni Blanc, Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Such a broad range of wines translates into the delicate, balanced character of the distillate, which then matures in small French oak casks.
In the glass, St-Rémy VSOP shows an amber-yellow colour with a golden sheen. At first, livelier impressions quickly give way to fruity notes of apricot, peach, gooseberry and wild strawberry, while floral aromas subtly combine with tones of vanilla and wood. On the palate it is delicate and harmonious — fruit intertwines with wood, leading to a pronounced, vanilla finish.
This is a versatile and approachable brandy. The producer recommends it especially as a base for long drinks, such as red or white Sangria, but it will work just as well neat, without any additions, or on the rocks. For pairing, consider dark chocolate or a vanilla-based dessert, which will highlight its fruity-woody profile.
