Riesling is a dry white wine from Winnica Turnau, located in Baniewice in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The wine is made entirely from the Riesling grape variety, cultivated at one of Poland's largest vineyards.
The estate's history dates back to Jerzy Turnau, a landowner and founder of agricultural courses in Lviv. One of his great-grandsons, Zbigniew Turnau, has for many years run a large agricultural estate dedicated to cultivating cereals and rapeseed, and the favourable location and fruit-friendly climate eventually gave rise to the question: perhaps wine? One of Zbigniew's long-time collaborators is Tomasz Kasicki, an orchardist and, since 2013, also an oenologist. Plantings undertaken since 2009, along with the renovation of a nineteenth-century farm building, made it possible to create a modern vineyard with its own winery. A German winemaker from the Rhineland was also invited to collaborate. The vineyard consists of two parcels totalling 41 hectares, planted mainly with the Solaris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties, as well as Riesling, Hibernal, Seyval Blanc, Rondo, Regent and Cabernet.
The fermentation of this Riesling is carried out in a wooden vat. Riesling naturally reflects the conditions in which it ripens – in the cool West Pomeranian climate the fruit is harvested with high acidity, shaped by warm days and cool autumn nights.
On the nose the wine leads with notes of green apple, lime and citrus, complemented by an accent of melon and a delicate jasmine note. The Riesling retains its nobility, based on high, crisp acidity and a composition of green apple, lime and citrus aromas; its character is underlined by a melon aroma with a subtly marked jasmine note. On the palate it is apple- and grapefruit-driven, decisive and refreshing, with the potential for several years of development in the bottle. The wine's strength is 12%. The producer recommends it with white and red meat, pasta, fish and seafood.
