Port Charlotte 10 is a peated single malt from the island of Islay, the flagship expression of this Bruichladdich distillery line. Launched in May 2018, it is the first permanent age-statement release within the Port Charlotte brand – the peated part of Bruichladdich's portfolio, alongside the unpeated The Classic Laddie line and the heavily peated Octomore.
Port Charlotte 10 is created, distilled, matured and bottled exclusively on Islay, from 100% Scottish barley, slowly distilled through tall, narrow-necked stills. The malt is peated to a level of 40 ppm phenols, placing it in the heavily peated whisky segment, though below the extremes of Octomore. It is worth noting the difference in the origin of the peat – unlike many Islay distilleries, Bruichladdich does not source its peated malt from Port Ellen, but instead uses peated malt originating from the Highlands.
Maturation takes place on the shores of Loch Indaal. The whisky matures in 65% first fill American whiskey casks, 10% second fill American whiskey casks and 25% second fill French wine casks. It is bottled at 50% strength and, like all Bruichladdich whiskies, without colouring and without chill filtration.
In the sensory profile the peat does not dominate, but rather frames the other notes. The smoke is subdued by a maritime, ozonic character; it remains perceptible on the nose, yet dry and earthy in style, allowing the oak to come to the fore in waves of golden caramel, fudge, vanilla cream and notes of ginger, nutmeg and cloves. Citrus fruit appears, drawn out by a drop of water, delicate lemon meringue and clementine, and deeper down floral aromas of wild thyme, heather and sea thrift. On the palate the texture is oily and intense. Despite the noticeable 50% it does not burn; the peaty character is present straight away, but more woody and floral than medicinal, with a discernible maritime saltiness. The finish is long and smoky, with the soft sweetness of fudge and malted barley.
