Longmorn 23 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, the oldest of the three expressions from this distillery within Chivas Brothers' The Secret Speyside collection. The Secret Speyside Collection is a selection of single malts from lesser-known Speyside distilleries owned by Chivas Brothers; four sites make up the series: Braes of Glenlivet, Glen Keith, Longmorn and Caperdonich, which has been closed since 2002 and subsequently demolished. The collection features three Longmorn releases: this 23 year old plus 18 and 25 year old versions, with the 25 year old bottled at cask strength of 52.2%. All are non-chill filtered and of natural colour.

The Longmorn distillery was founded in 1894 by John Duff and lies about three miles south of Elgin in the Speyside region; in 1898 it was joined by the nearby Longmorn 2 plant (known today as Benriach), and Duff connected the two with an internal railway carrying malt, spirit and casks. Longmorn now belongs to Chivas Brothers, and its malt has long been used in many of the most famous blended whiskies on the market. The character of the distillate stems from the design of the plant: large stills with wide necks are used here, with relatively low fill levels, which limits copper contact and reflux during distillation, producing a "heavy" new make with a distinctly malty and slightly spicy character.

Longmorn 23 Year Old from The Secret Speyside collection was matured in American oak hogsheads and barrels and is bottled at 48%. According to Chivas Brothers' official notes, the nose reveals soft, vanilla-laced fudge and creamy caramel, coated in milk chocolate and honey; the palate is led by ripe pears and sweet red apples interwoven with spicy gingerbread, while the finish is exceptionally long and velvety smooth.

Trade reviews expand on the profile further. The nose is described as classic Longmorn: soft and sweet, with honey, hazelnuts, caramel and milk chocolate, while the creamy palate reveals orchard fruit, ginger and allspice. The palate has solid intensity and seems a touch more concentrated than 48% would suggest: first come tart plums and chocolate, followed by woody bitterness and coffee, then unripe pears, cinnamon and clove, salted liquorice, creamy vanilla, ginger and a note of pepper.

This is an exceptionally mature Longmorn from a distillery renowned for long-aged whiskies; released in 2017, it was at the time the oldest expression in the brand's core range. Longmorn is often called by connoisseurs every distiller's favourite malt, and for over a hundred years it has been a component that rounds out premium blended whiskies, delivering a heavy, fruity and oily structure that is hard to replicate.
