Laphroaig Select is a single malt Scotch whisky from the island of Islay, combining spirit matured in five different cask types. It is a vatting of single malts hand-selected from five different casks. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
The Laphroaig distillery lies on the southern coast of Islay, and its character grows directly out of its surroundings. Laphroaig draws its character from the island itself – sea breezes on stone walls, peat bogs rich in coastal flora, heather and seaweed, and the soft island water that feeds the malt and the still.
The way this whisky is composed is key here. To create the Laphroaig Select vatting, the Master Distiller hand-selected whiskies maturing in Oloroso sherry butts, first-fill Bourbon quarter casks and Pedro Ximénez hogsheads at various stages of maturation. The whole is finished in virgin American oak casks – a rarely encountered wood in Scotch whisky. During this maturation the casks spend at least six months in the warmest, highest reaches of the warehouse during the hottest time of year, so that the wood expands fully and the spirit can absorb the aroma of American oak.
On the nose and palate, gentleness intertwines with the distillery's signature peat. The nose leads with peat smoke, quickly followed by ripe red fruit. On the palate it is first sweet, then peat smoke with touches of ash and seaweed. A long finish with floral notes, hints of marzipan and lime. This is the calmest expression of Laphroaig, in which the signature notes of medicinal peat smoke and seaweed resound alongside red fruit, lime and a floral finish.
Within the distillery's range, Select plays the role of the gentlest expression. Select is tuned for comfort: rounder, less sharp, with peat that integrates into the whole rather than leading it. The set includes an accompanying glass.
