Jim Beam White is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey from the distillery in Clermont, Kentucky — the brand's flagship and most widely available expression, bottled at 40% ABV. The bourbon is aged for four years, twice as long as the law requires.
Behind the brand stands the Beam family. Jim Beam is a bourbon produced in Kentucky by the Japanese group Suntory Global Spirits, and since 1795, with a break for Prohibition, seven generations of the Beam family have been involved in whiskey production. The brand name became "Jim Beam" in 1943 in honour of James B. Beam, who rebuilt the company after the end of Prohibition; previously owned by the Beam family and later by the Fortune Brands holding company, the brand was purchased by Suntory Holdings in 2014.
The foundation of the profile is a high-corn mash bill. Published recipes differ in the details: some sources give 77% corn, 13% rye and 10% malted barley, others 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley. The water comes from the region's natural source — Jim Beam begins with water naturally filtered through the limestone shelf of central Kentucky, and the yeast strain used since the end of Prohibition is added to the tank with the grain. The bourbon is made using the sour mash method, and maturation takes place in new, charred American white oak barrels.
The profile is dominated by notes classic for the style. The nose is sweet, with aromas of vanilla, toasted oak, caramel and a touch of sweet corn; the palate is medium-bodied, soft and mellow, with balanced notes of light caramel, delicate spice and vanilla cream; the finish is clean, briefly sweet, with a gentle, oaky warmth. Trade reviews also mention the nuttiness characteristic of this bourbon — on the nose nuts, young oak, caramel and a little sweetness with a presence of peanut butter, on the palate nuttiness with oak and caramel plus a light note of pepper, and a short finish.
