Glenmorangie Calvados Cask Finish is a 12-year-old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the fifth instalment in the Barrel Select Release series and the distillery's first ever bottling finished in Calvados casks. Bottled at 46%.

The Glenmorangie distillery sits on the shores of the Dornoch Firth, just outside the town of Tain in northern Scotland. Created under the direction of Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Whisky Creation, this edition was born of a fascination with the fruity notes of Calvados. Whisky matured for over 10 years in American white oak ex-bourbon casks was selected and then finished in Calvados casks from the Pays d'Auge, which had previously held that spirit for 20 years. After two years of maturation in these casks, Glenmorangie Calvados Cask Finish was born. It has been bottled at 46%, non-chill filtered, with a naturally pale golden hue.

On the nose, orchard fruit takes centre stage. The nose is intensely aromatic at full strength, with notes of baked apples, pears, vanilla, almonds and a slightly waxy touch. With the addition of water, floral notes emerge, such as narcissus, jasmine and heather honey, followed by the aroma of freshly baked sweet pastry. The palate is at once oily and spicy, leading into a wealth of sweet flavours: baked pears, toffee apple, marzipan, chocolate praline, with hints of lemon balm, eucalyptus and a note of charcoal. The finish is long, lingering and almost slightly cooling in character.

The critic's view confirms the influence of the Calvados cask. The nose is fruity and more apple-focused than a typical Glenmorangie, with apple pie to the fore, while the creamy palate brings out grilled pineapple, Greek yoghurt, baked apples, dried apricot and a hint of pepper.
