Delaforce Curious & Ancient 20 Years Old is a Tawny Port from the Porto appellation in the Douro Valley, a blend with an age indication, in which the average age of the wines used is 20 years. Age-indicated Ports are blends of wines from many vintages, selected by the cellar master from the finest lots, matured in carefully selected oak casks.
Behind the brand stands Real Companhia Velha. It is the oldest wine company in Portugal, with over 260 years of Port production history, founded in 1756 by the Portuguese prime minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis of Pombal. One of the company's first official tasks was to define the boundaries of the Douro wine region – an act that made the Douro the world's first regional appellation. The wine is made from classic Douro grape varieties; the producer's technical sheet lists Touriga nacional and Touriga Franca, at a strength of 20.0%, total acidity of 3.91 g/l and pH 3.4.
The Tawny character results from long ageing in wood. As Port matures in seasoned oak casks over many years, it gradually loses its original deep purple and takes on a delicate amber hue, while the simple fruitiness of the young wine gives way to a broad range of subtle, mellowed notes, such as liquorice, walnuts, honey, figs, vanilla, spices and noble oak.
In the profile, the producer indicates specific notes. This twenty-year-old Tawny has aromas of crushed walnuts, raisins and prunes with an earthy base, is full-bodied, with a dense structure and a toned-down, semi-sweet character, with a chocolatey and creamy finish balanced by acidity.
For pairing, the producer suggests dessert and cheeses. Mild cheeses, almond tart, caramel tart, panettone. Bottles should be stored on their side in a cool place (12°C to 14°C) away from direct light, and the wine served at a temperature of 17°C–18°C and decanted. The version presented is a miniature bottle with a capacity of 0.05 l.
