Auchentoshan American Oak is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Scotland's Lowlands region – a light, pale and silky-smooth example of the classic Lowland style, bottled at 40% ABV. It is made at the Auchentoshan distillery in the Scottish Lowlands as a triple-distilled whisky matured entirely in American oak casks. American Oak was introduced in 2014 to replace the earlier Classic edition.
The Auchentoshan distillery lies at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills on the outskirts of Clydebank, north-west of Glasgow, and is one of the few working Lowland distilleries. It has been in operation since 1823 and today forms part of the Beam Suntory portfolio; unusually, its entire production is destined for single malt, and every drop is distilled three times. This triple distillation is the brand's hallmark – it gives the spirit exceptional lightness and purity. Triple distillation creates an outstandingly smooth, lively single malt.
The raw material is malted barley, and the character of the spirit is determined solely by contact with American oak wood. The whisky matures entirely in first-fill American oak casks previously used to age bourbon. It is precisely this maturation in first-fill ex-bourbon casks that makes it a rich, vanilla-laden and fruity dram.
Its aroma and flavour profile is dominated by sweetness and fruity freshness. This is a lively single malt saturated with vanilla, coconut and layers of juicy citrus fruit. On the palate it is vivacious, with notes of creamy vanilla, coconut and white peach, while the finish remains crisp, with candied grapefruit and a lingering hint of warming spice. The structure is light to medium, easy-going and approachable, with no rough edges.
When it comes to serving, it is a versatile dram. American Oak can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in a cocktail. It works wonderfully with a little ice and a twist of citrus peel. Thanks to its citrus freshness and vanilla sweetness, it is also often recommended as an aperitif before a meal. Good pairings include light cheeses, seafood in lemon sauce, and vanilla- and coconut-based desserts.
