Aberlour A'bunadh Alba is a cask strength single malt from Speyside that turns the distillery's traditional sherried character on its head, showcasing its spirit in its purest, oak-driven form. Introduced in 2019 as the first official extension of the iconic A'bunadh line, it is bottled at cask strength and matured exclusively in American ex-bourbon barrels.

Aberlour has deep roots in the heart of Scotland's Speyside. Founded in 1879, the Aberlour distillery lies in the village of Aberlour in the heart of Speyside — Scotland's leading whisky-producing region, renowned for drams of subtle depth and elegance. The name of the edition is a play on words: A'bunadh means "of the origin", while Alba refers to American oak (Quercus Alba) used in this whisky.

The key difference from the classic A'bunadh lies in the wood. Aberlour A'bunadh Alba is a cask strength, no-age-statement single malt from the Speyside distillery, yet — unlike Aberlour A'bunadh, which matures exclusively in sherry casks — A'bunadh Alba matures in American ex-bourbon barrels. Like its twin, A'bunadh Alba is released in small batches from casks of varying ages, selected only once they are ready; these are married together and bottled without chill filtration and without artificial colouring, at full cask strength. This particular bottle comes in at 60.9%.

In terms of aroma and flavour, American oak plays first fiddle. On the nose the whisky is sweet, with a distinct aroma of ripe red apples, honey, vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. On the palate it is sweet, with a creamy, oily texture; as it opens up, citrus peel, cinnamon and dried apple emerge. The finish is long and sweet, with a pronounced peppery note. The professional picture is rounded out by the Whisky Advocate review, which finds black-and-white cookies, yellow cake with vanilla frosting and caramel shortbread on the nose, alongside honeysuckle, jasmine and coconut cream; the full, coating palate carries pears in syrup, nougat, lemon curd and toasted coconut, while vanilla, chocolate and nuts linger almost endlessly on the finish.

Serve neat, without any additions, or with a splash of water — add water or don't: it's delicious either way. Thanks to its high strength and sweet, oaky character, it makes an excellent after-dinner contemplation dram, alongside dark chocolate, vanilla- and caramel-based desserts or matured cheeses. It's worth noting that this edition is a collector's item: A'bunadh Alba took 5th place on Whisky Advocate's Top 20 Whiskies of 2019 list.
