Yamazaki 12 Years Old is a Japanese single malt whisky from the Yamazaki distillery, the flagship expression of the Suntory house, recognisable for the influence of Japanese Mizunara oak. It is a Suntory single malt from Japan's oldest malt distillery, and within the Yamazaki family it sits alongside the Distiller's Reserve, 18 and 25 Years Old expressions, with components matured in American, Spanish and Japanese Mizunara oak. It is bottled at 43%.

The Yamazaki distillery is the first and oldest malt whisky distillery in Japan, founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory. The product itself debuted later – introduced in 1984, it was the first serious Japanese single malt aimed at the global market. The distillery lies between Kyoto and Osaka, in a region known for its pure water and misty climate. This is where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge, which provides a characteristic misty microclimate and one of the softest waters in Japan.

The whisky is made exclusively from malted barley, and its character is built by the interplay of several cask types. Yamazaki 12 Year Old is a single malt from 100% malted barley, matured in five different types of oak casks of varying shapes and sizes, including American, Spanish and Japanese Mizunara oak – the native oak species prized for the notes of sandalwood, spices, coconut and incense it imparts. The distillery's location was chosen for its specific maturation climate – high humidity and considerable temperature swings between the seasons, which intensifies the reaction between the distillate and the wood.

In the glass, fruit and a delicate structure lead the way. The aroma offers soft fruits, peach, pineapple and grapefruit, while the palate brings coconut, cranberry and butter, with Mizunara notes running throughout. Critics note a tropical and honeyed profile – a tropical nose with pineapple, coconut, vanilla and distinct floral notes, reminiscent of a sweet fruit tart with a touch of acidity and a hint of toasted oak. The finish is described as medium-long and waxy, in which the tropical flavours turn to dried fruits and a touch of warm baking spices lingering on the tongue. The Whisky Advocate reviewer also highlighted an aromatic nose of lychee, rose water and raspberry meringue, followed by silky honey, lemon, gentle spices and candied pineapple on the palate.
