Jaime I is the flagship brandy of Bodegas Torres from the Catalan region of Penedès – a majestic, long-aged spirit that pays tribute to the founder of the house, Don Jaime Torres. Jaime I is a work of art, inspired by modernism, honouring the founder of Bodegas Torres; it is made entirely from the Parellada grape and is distinguished by exceptionally long ageing using the traditional solera method, which lends the brandy its vintage character.
The brandy is made entirely from the Parellada variety, a regional grape closely associated with the Torres house. Jaime I is created from very old soleras aged on a base of selected distilled white wines; some of the soleras began as distilled Parellada wines destined for Torres 10 brandy, which were set aside for many years to build up a precious reserve stock, and these old reserves were enriched with the house's finest soleras, the oldest of which are 30 years old. Finally, to complement the aromatic intensity of these brandies with lighter fruity and floral notes, a small quantity of 1972 eau-de-vie from Folle Blanche lees was added – the rarest and most noble variety, used for the highest quality alembic brandies.
In the glass, Jaime I shows itself deep and elegant. It has a beautiful dark mahogany colour; it is complex, majestic and balanced. The aroma reveals notes strongly suggestive of vanilla, walnut, flowers, plum, cedar and sandalwood. The spirit is deep and inviting, with layers of dried fig, sultana and stewed plum, underpinned by toasted oak, vanilla pod and a hint of cigar box; a nutty richness runs throughout – walnut and almond – alongside a touch of bitter chocolate and sweet spice, with a velvety wave of raisin, date and candied orange peel. The brandy is bottled at 38% ABV.
It is best enjoyed neat, as an after-dinner digestif, in a slightly warmed glass. It is worth warming a cognac glass, pouring yourself a generous measure and leaving it to warm gently – traditionally over a glass of hot water. It pairs superbly with bitter chocolate, desserts based on dried fruit and nuts, as well as with aromatic coffee or a fine cigar.
