The Macallan Rare Cask, 2023 Release is a single malt Scotch whisky from Scotland's Speyside, bottled at 43% ABV. The Macallan Rare Cask is created from the finest and rarest sherry seasoned oak casks, selected by the distillery's Whisky Mastery Team, to deliver the full structure characteristic of The Macallan.

The brand comes from a Speyside distillery owned by the Edrington group. The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Craigellachie, Moray, and The Macallan Distillers Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Edrington Group, which acquired the brand from Highland Distillers in 1999. At the heart of the Rare Cask style is the work with wood: the edition is a showcase of whisky from the finest sherry seasoned casks, chosen because they lend a particularly complex, raisin-driven character to this single malt.

The cask seasoning process at The Macallan is clearly described. Casks of European and American oak spend time in Spanish bodegas, where they are filled with sherry wine to season them; over the following months the sherry rests quietly in the casks, which are then emptied and transported to the distillery in Speyside, where they are filled with strong and fruity new make spirit.

The aroma and flavour profile is dominated by raisin and dark sweetness. On the nose there are delicate notes of vanilla with rich raisin, followed by a sweet combination of fresh apple, lemon and orange; on the palate an intense sweet raisin leads towards vanilla and dark chocolate, with layers of light citrus peel, while the finish is long, rich and velvety. The spirit has a ruby mahogany colour.

The 2023 edition combines whisky with a cultural element. The Macallan Rare Cask, 2023 Release was created in collaboration with musician Charlie Burchill of the band Simple Minds. The Rare Cask 2023 Release was launched in limited quantities worldwide.
