Templeton Rye Stout Cask Finish is a limited-edition rye whiskey from Iowa, finished in barrels that previously held a coffee-chocolate imperial stout. It is the fourth release in Templeton distillery's Barrel Finish series, launched in 2019; earlier editions include Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish (2021), Caribbean Rum Cask Finish (2020) and Maple Cask Finish (2019).
The whiskey is built on a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley; it matures for six years in new flame-charred American oak barrels and is then finished for three months in barrels that held a coffee-chocolate stout, itself previously aged in bourbon barrels. The total age of the spirit is six years and three months. It is bottled at 46% ABV. This release, sold on an allocation basis, focuses on a coffee and chocolate profile, in keeping with the series' premise of exploring unusual wood treatments and unexpected flavours.
The spirit's colour is chestnut. The producer's tasting note cites aromas of roasted chocolate, cocoa and dried apricot; on the palate, sweet malt and toasted barley intertwine with black cherry and roasted almond, while subtle coffee tones combine with a base of rye pepper and spice, closing with a creamy finish of roasted coffee and cocoa that lingers long.
An independent trade review noted a different aromatic register: on the nose, herbal notes of cinnamon, red berries, green pepper, caramel and grapefruit zest. On the palate, pine, peppercorns, salted sweetness and freshly cut grass give way to undertones of molasses, black cherry and dark chocolate. The finish is long, dry yet creamy and moderately grainy.
