Speyburn 18 Year Old is a Speyside single malt matured for eighteen years in a combination of American and Spanish oak casks. It is bottled at 40% ABV. The version described in this product listing corresponds to the current, mellower incarnation of this release.

The Speyburn distillery lies in the town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside. It was founded by brothers John and Edward Hopkins together with their cousin Edward Broughton in 1897, and designed by the celebrated Victorian distillery architect Charles Doig. The release itself is commemorative in character. The bottling was dedicated to distillery manager Bobby Anderson, as 2018 coincided with his eighteenth year of work at the distillery. It is a small, anniversary-celebrating batch, released in a run of just 1,500 cases (9,000 bottles) per year worldwide.

The maturation method is based on two cask types. The spirit matures for the full period separately in American oak ex-bourbon casks or Spanish oak ex-sherry casks, which are then married together. The influence of both oak types shapes the aromatic profile – with a distinct, yet not overwhelming, sherry imprint.

On the nose the producer points to sweet toffee and dark chocolate, candied almonds and a note of tropical fruit. The official tasting notes describe a deep golden colour, and on the nose sweet toffee, candied almonds and abundant tropical fruit, with a touch of caramelised sugar and candied apples turning into a lightly honeyed smokiness. On the palate, creamy dark chocolate, toffee, gentle oak spice and a citrus note lead into a long, lightly smoky finish with a bittersweet edge.

Among the distillery's official offerings, this is the oldest expression in the core range. It belongs to Speyburn's core line-up and sits above the no-age-statement Bradan Orach as well as the 10- and 15-year-old expressions. It joined the core range for the first time in 2018.
