Soberano Reserva 5 is a classic Spanish brandy from Andalusia, aged in the González Byass cellars in Jerez de la Frontera — the cradle of Spanish brandy. The Soberano brand was created at González Byass back in the late 19th century and is among the most widely available brandies in Spain.
González Byass is one of the most recognisable houses of Jerez, founded in 1835 by Manuel María González and renowned above all for its sherries, including the dry Fino Tio Pepe. Soberano brandy is made from a distillate of Airén grapes grown in the La Mancha region. After harvesting and fermentation of the must, the finest material is selected, and the distillate itself is produced in column stills.
At the heart of the style lies the traditional Jerez criaderas y solera system. The number 5 in the name refers to the five levels of ageing (criaderas) through which the spirit passes during maturation, which lasts around 5 years. The casks are American oak previously seasoned with sherry, lending the brandy its characteristic depth and roundness. The spirit is bottled at 36%.
The profile is dominated by notes of burnt caramel, nuts and oak, with subtle hints of toffee and dried fruit, a smooth, gently spicy palate and a long finish. This is a versatile brandy — it can be served neat, on the rocks, chilled with a slice of fresh orange, as well as in long drinks with cola, lemonade or ginger ale.
Soberano Reserva 5 works well as an after-dinner drink, alongside a cup of strong coffee or dark chocolate, and also as a base for dry cocktails. It is a proposition for those who appreciate the tradition of Jerez in an accessible, everyday form.
