Quinta das Carvalhas 10 Years Old is a Portuguese fortified wine in the Aged Tawny Port category, originating from the Douro region and bottled here in a miniature format with a capacity of 0.05 l. Quinta das Carvalhas 10 Years opens the premium line of aged ports produced at this estate, in which the complexity of flavours and aromas is the dominant characteristic.

Behind the wine stands Real Companhia Velha, one of the oldest wine companies in Portugal. Real Companhia Velha, also known as Royal Oporto Winery, has operated continuously since 1756 in the service of Port wine, and, founded by royal charter during the reign of King Joseph I, was initially intended to regulate the production and trade of port and played a key role in demarcating the boundaries and quality standards of the Douro region. The estate itself is one of the symbols of the valley. Quinta das Carvalhas occupies a prominent position on the slope of the left bank of the Douro River in Pinhão and stretches along the slopes of the right bank of its tributary – the Torto River. The earliest written references to this Quinta date back to 1759, and its old vines from post-phylloxera plantings reach an age of about a century.

This Tawny is made in the classic way – by blending wines aged in wood. This Port is produced from a skilful combination of wines that mature for a minimum period of 10 years. The blend is based on traditional Douro grape varieties. It is created from a combination of the finest lots of Port wine aged in oak barrels with an average age of 10 years, from various grape varieties such as Tinta barroca, Touriga nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz.

The profile shows the effect of ageing in wood as well as preserved fruitiness. The wine displays notes of plums and dried berries with roasted hazelnuts, sweet spices and caramel; it is creamy and chocolatey, full-bodied, with a deep, dark-fruit character and a smooth finish. Critic Roger Voss noted the maturity and structure of this style. For a ten-year-old port, the wine is impressively mature, showing plenty of wood-ageing aromas that have fully merged with the younger fruitiness; sweet, with notes of caramel, ready to drink. Despite the distinctly perceptible spirit, the wine retains good acidity and flavours of dried fruit, as well as plenty of freshness, still recalling red fruits, while the wood ageing provides it with solid support.
