Port Charlotte 2012 SC:01 is a heavily peated single malt from the Bruichladdich distillery on the Isle of Islay, the first instalment of the Cask Exploration series built entirely on barley grown on Islay. SC:01 is the fifth release in the Cask Exploration series and the first to use 100% Islay barley, malted to 40 ppm.
The SC:01 2012 vintage was conceived, grown, distilled, matured and bottled exclusively on Islay, with the 2011 harvest coming from seven of the distillery's farming partners, all within a 10-mile radius of the site. The distillation used Concerto, Propino, Publican and Oxbridge barley varieties with a phenol level of 40 ppm, after which the spirit matured in a combination of casks for 9 years. The malt, prepared to 40 ppm by maltsters on the Scottish mainland, returned to the island to be distilled in tall, narrow-necked stills.
Maturation followed three separate paths. The casks used for SC:01 2012 came from three different parcels of whisky: parcel one was sherry butts transferred into first-fill Sauternes casks, parcel two was second-fill American whiskey casks transferred into second-fill Sauternes casks, and parcel three was a combination of first- and second-fill American whiskey casks transferred into first-fill Sauternes casks. The Sauternes casks came from the left bank of the Garonne river in Bordeaux. The whisky was not chill-filtered and its colour is natural.
The aromatic profile is led by a sweet, fruity tone before the smoke comes through. Marmalade in colour, the nose offers sweet stone fruit and a delicate floral scent with notes of peaches in syrup, dried apricots, honeydew melon and ripe pineapple, followed by brown sugar, vanilla fudge, caramel and marzipan, crowned with heady accents of honeysuckle and heather. Peat smoke and warm, toasted oak arrive a moment later, adding depth and complexity. On the palate, warmth and a supple texture bring a balance between light peat smoke and ripe fruit, while beneath the gentle smoke earthy notes of leather and shoe polish emerge; the oak contributes vanilla, chocolate and citrus. The finish carries maritime minerality and earthy peat smoke with a citrus bite.
Bottled at 55.2% ABV, in a 0.7 l size. SC:01 2012 is a 9-year-old peated Port Charlotte made from Islay barley at 40 ppm, released in June 2022 and bottled at 55.2% without colouring or chill filtration.
