Pliska is a classic Bulgarian grape brandy — one of the country's most recognisable distillates, named after the first capital of the Bulgarian state. Pliska brandy is a spirit made from grapes according to Bulgarian tradition, produced since 1966 in the picturesque town of Veliki Preslav. The producer is Vinex Preslav. Founded in 1948, Vinex Preslav still remains one of the leaders in the production of high-quality wines and spirits.
Only white grape varieties are used as raw material. The varieties Dimyat, Rkatsiteli and Ugni Blanc go into the production of the spirits, and the distillates are obtained in copper pot stills using the traditional method. The vineyards lie in the Shumen region of north-eastern Bulgaria. The brandy is bottled at 36% ABV.
Maturation takes place in oak, and it is this that gives the drink its character. This rich brandy is created from wine distillates aged in small oak casks for at least five years, which gives it a soft, harmonious and full body, while the wood provides an intense colour and oaky accents on the finish. The bottle capacity is 500 ml and the alcohol content 36%.
In the glass, the spirit appears mature and elegant. After a long maturation process, Pliska delights with a deep amber colour reminiscent of old gold and unfolds aromas of fruit and delicate vanilla. Notes of ripe grapes are underpinned by elegant accents of wood, subtle vanilla and tones of honey; the vanilla returns on the finish, and the long, lingering finish carries a soothing warmth. This classic amber-gold brandy has a full, velvety taste and, despite its high strength, remains delicate; when slightly warmed it releases very intense aromas, revealing subtle oaky notes.
Pliska tastes best after a meal. The five-year-old Pliska brandy can be served as an aperitif or digestif, it also pairs wonderfully with desserts, and in winter it is excellent alongside a cup of black tea. It is best drunk after eating, from tulip glasses or cognac snifters, at slightly below room temperature. It is also a classic choice to accompany a cigar.
