Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs 2017 is a vintage Champagne from the Champagne appellation, made entirely from a single grape variety, Chardonnay. Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs is the rarest of Perrier-Jouët's cuvées, the culmination of more than two centuries of the house's experience in drawing out the floral nuances of the Chardonnay grape.
The fruit comes from two legendary parcels in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. The grapes are harvested from two historic plots, Bouron Leroi and Bouron du Midi, acquired by the house in the mid-19th century. Located in Cramant, this Grand Cru terroir covers 6.8 hectares of mid-slope vineyard on limestone soil with a south-eastern exposure. This limestone, chalky ground is responsible for the wine's mineral core. The 2017 vintage itself was shaped by unusual weather conditions. The winter was cool and dry, and after an exceptionally warm start to spring, April brought a sharp drop in temperature and episodes of frost. The summer was hot and dry until the end of July, after which alternating periods of heavy rainfall and high temperatures continued right up to the harvest in early September, accelerating ripening and yielding wines with a distinctly floral profile.
This cuvée matures at length on the lees, which builds its creamy texture and complexity. Total production of Belle Époque Blanc de Blancs never exceeds 40,000 bottles, the dosage is usually around 8 grams per litre, and the wine spends at least six to eight years on the lees.
In the glass it shows a pale gold colour with greenish reflections and a fine, persistent mousse. The robe is subtly golden with green highlights, the effervescence is very delicate, and the expressive nose combines aromas of wild white flowers with notes of honey. On the palate this pale gold wine unfurls delicate notes of white roses and light fruit on the nose, offers a silky sensation on the palate, subtly fruity with a touch of white pepper, and the finish remains persistently elegant.
Classic food pairings underline the wine's gastronomic character. It works beautifully with fine seafood such as lobster, scallop carpaccio, sea bass in a salt crust or porcini mushrooms. The bottle retains the house's iconic design, adorned with the Japanese white anemone, a motif created for Perrier-Jouët in 1902 by the Art Nouveau master Émile Gallé.
