Oban Distillers Edition is a single malt from the Oban distillery in the western Highlands, distinguished by its double maturation with a finish in casks that previously held Spanish Montilla Fino wine. This Distillers Edition expression underwent double maturation in Montilla Fino casks from a bodega. It is bottled at 43% ABV.
The distillery is one of the oldest and smallest in Scotland. Oban Distillery – one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland – has been producing single malt since 1794, and was founded by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson. Oban is distilled in small, lantern-shaped copper pot stills, among the smallest in Scotland. The Distillers Edition line itself is built on a consistent maturation principle. Every Distillers Edition undergoes a second (i.e. double) maturation in casks that previously held fortified wine. In this case it is Montilla Fino – Montilla wines are produced in the southern part of the province of Córdoba in Spain, using methods similar to sherry production.
On the nose there appears the distillery's characteristic combination of maritime influence and fruity sweetness. The nose is outstanding: fruity and intense, with sea salt, crushed grapes, orange peel and notes of smoke. Highly complex. On the palate it is led by soft malt and a wave of salty, sea-like texture. The most explosive Oban – soft malt, then wave after wave of delicate yet rich fruit notes against a brine backdrop. The finish drifts towards coffee and oak. Sweetened Jamaican coffee and oak, with an attractive malt-biscuit effect as it fades.
The fortified wine cask adds layers of sweetness and fruit notes without obscuring the maritime core of the spirit. The second maturation in Montilla Fino casks develops notes of butterscotch, toffee and caramel, with a weave of sea salt and a smoky-sweet finish. It is a profile in which Oban's salty, coastal signature meets the fruity sweetness of the cask.
Rich and sweet dishes make a good pairing. Richly sweet and drily smoky – it works well with intense flavours.
