Młody Ziemniak 2024 ("Young Potato") is a vintage potato vodka from Podlasie, single-distilled and bottled at 40% ABV. The latest edition of this potato spirit is produced at the Chopin Distillery in Krzesk in the Podlasie region and is distilled just once, in order to preserve the full bouquet of flavour and aroma. Because rectification is dispensed with, the spirit is classified as a spirit drink rather than a vodka within the meaning of EU regulations.

The product is released under the Polmos Siedlce name, and its story dates back to an experiment conducted years ago. Młody Ziemniak debuted in 2009, when Waldemar Durakiewicz, the legendary distiller and manager of Polmos Siedlce, decided to create an innovative spirit – he used a single potato variety harvested in June, subjected it to a single distillation, forwent rectification and diluted it to 40%. Młody Ziemniak was created at the Krzesk distillery, famous for producing Chopin Potato vodka.

The raw material for the 2024 vintage is a single potato variety from the early harvest. Only young potatoes of the Denar variety, grown in Podlasie, were used in production – the potatoes were planted in April and harvested in June and July 2024, which allows them to retain their high water content and lower starch levels. The character of each edition depends on the weather of the given season – in 2024 a rainy spring and warm summer resulted in a concentration of the potato flavour. The technology itself is demanding: young potatoes, low in starch, are a considerably more difficult raw material for alcohol production than those harvested in autumn, and a single bottle of the finished spirit is made from around 50 potatoes. After distillation is complete, Młody Ziemniak rests in vats, which is why the individual vintages are not bottled until March of the following year. The 2024 edition reached the market on 26 March 2025.

In the glass the spirit remains clear, with no colouring. The nose is dominated by delicate, sweet potato notes, with subtle floral and fruity accents, while on the palate the vodka is velvety and smooth, with a distinct young potato flavour broken up by a light sweetness and an earthy note. This is a more expressive and fuller vodka than classic, strongly neutral rectified vodkas, with a more pronounced character of the raw material, which makes it better suited as a vodka for mindful sipping neat.

The edition has a limited run and collector's appeal. Since its debut, Młody Ziemniak has been a vintage-dated spirit released in small quantities, which also gives it collector's value. The label is minimalist, with hand-written details of the harvest year, the potato variety and the weather conditions, and it also bears the signature of Waldemar Durakiewicz and the Chopin Distillery logo.
