Lagavulin 12 Year Old Special Release 2019 is a single malt Scotch from Islay, bottled at natural cask strength of 56.5%. Part of the Diageo Special Releases 2019 series, this limited edition was produced at the Lagavulin distillery and matured in refill American oak casks for 12 years before bottling. The whisky was bottled without chill filtration and without colouring.
The annual cask strength expression of the twelve-year-old Lagavulin is a permanent fixture of the Special Releases series. A special batch of cask strength Lagavulin 12 from refill American oak casks has been bottled in this series every year since 2002, and the differences between the individual batches make them the subject of fascinating comparisons. The 2019 edition follows the "Rare by Nature" theme. The label and tube feature a golden eagle, in keeping with the overall theme of Special Releases 2019, and the golden eagle is one of Scotland's most prized birds of prey.
The aroma and flavour profile is dominated by peat smoke framed by maritime minerality. The 2019 release is sweeter and more mineral than earlier editions, with aromas of sweet green peat, green apple, lemon oil, wood smoke, warm tar and brine. On the palate there are notes of salty sea breeze, fresh green vegetables, young oak, barbecue sauce, cinnamon, lemon sweets and earthy, damp peat. The nose also reveals brine, sea air, wood smoke, green apples and ginger.
The texture reflects bottling at full cask strength. At 56.5% and with no chill filtration or colouring, the whisky has a thick, oily consistency and an intense flavour profile. At natural strength it is silky in texture and unexpectedly sweet, intense and very smoky from the very first sip, with a light acidity, a pinch of sea salt and a long, warming, heavily smoky finish.
This is a limited-run collector's release. According to the bottling data of 12 July 2019, the edition was matured in American hogsheads, with 60,762 bottles of 700 ml produced at 56.5%. The whisky is part of a collection of eight limited edition cask strength releases.
