Krug Grande Cuvée is a multi-vintage champagne from the Champagne appellation, the flagship blend of Maison Krug based on three varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier. This is no ordinary non-vintage champagne. Priced at a level close to the prestige cuvées of many other great champagne houses, it is a prestige cuvée in its own right.

The heart of the style lies in the way it is blended. Beyond the notion of vintage, Krug Grande Cuvée is always a blend of more than 120 individual wines from more than 10 different vintages, expressing a fullness of flavours and aromas impossible to achieve with wines of a single year. The house was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, and each edition reflects his original vision. What makes Grande Cuvée exceptional is the remarkably high proportion of reserve wines (usually 30–50%) and their unusually advanced age. Because Krug handles its numerous reserve wines in individual lots before vinification – typically one variety, from one plot and one vintage – it has several hundred blending components at its disposal to compose Grande Cuvée.

Characteristic of the style is a patina of complexity built by time. Grande Cuvée is a blend of more than 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, and its exceptional finesse results from at least six further years spent in the cellars; composing each bottle requires more than twenty years. This nutty complexity, so recognisable in the Krug profile, arises in part from fermentation in barrel. The enveloping core of fruit is completed by the patina of nutty complexity characteristic of Krug, imparted by fermentation in barrel.

In the glass the champagne has a bright golden colour and fine, lively bubbles. The aromatic and flavour profile comprises aromas of blossoming flowers, ripe, dried and citrus fruits, as well as marzipan and gingerbread; on the palate notes of hazelnuts, nougat, barley sugar, fruit jellies and citrus fruits, almonds, brioche and honey. The structure combines a creamy fullness with a distinct acidity and a long, citrusy finish.

Krug recommends serving the champagne chilled. Maison Krug recommends serving its champagnes at a temperature of 9 to 12 degrees Celsius, as lower temperatures restrict the expression of their flavours and aromas. As for food pairings, Grande Cuvée lends itself to many culinary combinations, from the simplest to the most refined, from mature Parmesan to turbot with truffle; it can be drunk as an aperitif with Jabugo ham and mature Comté, or served with oysters, grilled prawns, Indian or Moroccan cuisine, as well as desserts. Successive editions gain with the passage of time. All Krug champagnes gain in complexity and patina as time passes.
