Johnnie Walker Blue Label Year of the Ox is a limited edition blended Scotch whisky released by Diageo for Chinese New Year 2021, in which the standard Blue Label blend is presented in a bottle designed by Chinese artist Shirley Gong. The European version, which includes the 0.7 l bottle, is bottled at 40%, while the US market received a 46% variant.
Johnnie Walker originates from the Scottish town of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire; the brand's first commercial blend, Old Highland Whisky, was introduced in 1867, and today the brand belongs to the Diageo group. Blue Label is a blend of malt and grain whiskies sourced from numerous Scottish distilleries. The rare casks used for this blend come from the world's largest whisky reserves, hand-selected and set aside for their quality, character and flavour, with only one in 10,000 containing whisky of sufficient character to convey the brand's distinctive, silky profile. The blend also draws on irreplaceable stocks from closed distilleries, the so-called ghost distilleries.
The liquid itself is the classic Blue Label blend, unchanged from the standard version. The nose reveals notes of oak, spicy seasoning, dried fruit and baked goods, along with berry fruit, aniseed, cedar and a touch of citrus. The palate is balanced, with toffee, gentle smoke, chocolate and a distinct malt accent. The finish is floral and oaky, of good length, carried by a Highland-style plume of smoke, with dried fruit, spice and honey.
The bottle is presented in a box illustrated with a golden ox, which in Chinese symbolism denotes diligence and honesty, and as it floats above the mountain clouds, alongside lanterns and cherry blossom, it heralds prosperity. Each bottle is individually numbered and the edition is no longer in production; this was Shirley Gong's second collaborative release with Johnnie Walker, following the Year of the Rat edition of 2020.
