Johnnie Walker Black Ruby is a Blended Scotch Whisky, a fruity variant from the Black Label family, built around a sweet, berry-driven profile. The blend is based on whiskies matured in red wine casks, Oloroso sherry casks, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and bourbon casks. This combination yields notes of raspberry jam, blackberry pie, figs, plums, honey and a delicate trace of smoke.
The whisky was created by Emma Walker. Emma Walker, the first woman to hold the position of master blender in Johnnie Walker's more than 200-year history, has built a big, silky blend combining the boldness of Scotch whisky with a vibrant flavour profile. Black Ruby is the first permanent addition to the core range created under Emma Walker's direction since she took on the role of master blender in 2022. An important component of the blend is the Roseisle distillery. Johnnie Walker Black Ruby uses whiskies matured in first-fill red wine casks from the progressive Roseisle distillery, known for its rich, sweet and silky whiskies.
Fruit leads the aromatic profile. The blend matured in bourbon casks and in red wine casks seasoned with a mixture of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry. On the nose it is jammy, with aromas of black cherry preserve, vanilla, caramel, pepper, tobacco, raisins and a note of fresh oak. Fruity, juicy and light on the palate, it offers fresh fig, cherry, plum, ginger biscuit, chocolate, caramel and smoke. The finish is full of dried fruit and smoke.
Here smoke plays the role of a seasoning rather than the main act. The smoke is lighter than in Black Label, allowing the fruit to come to the fore. The whisky is bottled at 40%. Black Ruby belongs to Johnnie Walker's permanent range. It is not a limited edition or a one-off release. Its global debut came in March 2025. Earlier, the whisky appeared in selected markets at the end of 2024. Trial launches took place in cities such as Mexico City, Sydney and San Juan. The set includes an accompanying glass.
