Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 YO is a Blended Scotch Whisky from the Diageo portfolio, built around a balanced, gentle smokiness. It is made exclusively from single malts and grain whiskies matured in casks for at least 12 years, sourced from the four corners of Scotland. Presented in a 0.7 l bottle at 40% ABV, complete with a glass.

The brand's history goes back to the Walker family grocery shop in Kilmarnock. The business, run since the shop opened in 1820, led to the launch of its own blended whisky in 1865. In time, three blends were on the market: Old Highland 5 YO, Special Old Highland 9 YO and Extra Special Old Highland 12 YO, and customers began referring to them by the colour of the label. The 1909 rebranding made this official: Old Highland became White Label, Special Old Highland became Red Label, and Extra Special Old Highland became Black Label. This change was accompanied by the introduction of the Striding Man logo, drawn by the cartoonist Tom Browne.

The backbone of the blend rests on the distilleries from the "Four Corners of Scotland" programme. The classic 12 YO Black Label is a blend based on the Clynelish distillery in the Highlands, Cardhu in Speyside, malt whisky from Glenkinchie and grain whisky from Cameronbridge, with a touch of smoke from Caol Ila. All the components of Black Label are matured for a minimum of 12 years, and the finished blend is bottled after chill filtration and the addition of colouring, at 40% ABV.

On the nose, delicate smoke intertwines with spice and sweetness. Winter spices and molasses, hints of white pepper and a touch of citrus. On the palate the whisky is rounded and well-structured. Rich and full, with notes of wood smoke and dry spice, accents of barley and grain, along with creamy toffee and a distinct herbal note. Quite fruity and long, with a note of sultanas and mixed fruit peel. A peppery note rounds out the wood smoke, which is subtle at first but gains intensity with time in the glass.

The producer suggests serving methods. The whisky is made exclusively from single malts and grain whiskies matured for at least 12 years, sourced from the four corners of Scotland, and can be served neat, over ice, or as the base for classic and contemporary highball-style cocktails.
