Glenmorangie Palo Cortado Barrel is a Scotch single malt whisky from the Highlands, the distillery's first ever expression finished in rare Palo Cortado sherry casks. It is the third bottling in the Barrel Select Release series – small batches assembled from casks hand-picked by Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie.

The Glenmorangie distillery is located in Tain in the northern Highlands. It is famous for its exceptionally tall, 8-metre stills, among the tallest in Scotland, which contribute to the light and complex character of this whisky. The spirit itself has a documented pedigree: it was distilled in early August 2010, spent eight years in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, was then finished in Palo Cortado casks for four years, and was bottled on 25 August 2022, making it a twelve-year-old whisky. Delighted by the silky, soft character of this whisky, Dr Bill decided to finish the selected batch in Palo Cortado casks, never before used at Glenmorangie.

Palo Cortado is an unusual type of sherry, key to the profile of this edition. It is the rarest style of sherry, arising purely by chance, when the protective layer of flor yeast fails to form on a sherry destined to become Amontillado. The whisky was bottled at 46%.

On the nose the whisky is rich, elegant and rounded; the sweetness of toffee, fudge and vanilla intertwines with notes of moss and hints of mulled wine, followed by aromas of honeyed ginger and milk chocolate truffle dusted with cinnamon. A few drops of water reveal notes of orange sherbet, cloves and Brazil nuts. On the palate an oily yet peppery texture leads to a burst of rich, sweet flavours: treacle toffee and milk chocolate interweave with clove, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg, while fruity undertones of raisins, dark plums and bitter orange are balanced by toasted rye bread and salted nuts. The finish is long and nutty, full of spice, leather and a note of aniseed.
