Glenmorangie The Original 12 Years Old is a Highland single malt matured entirely in American oak ex-bourbon casks, offered here in a set extended with two glasses. It is the flagship whisky of the Tain distillery – for Dr Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation, this expression means a great deal; it was one of the first drams he ever tasted, even before he joined the distillery, and he and his team decided to refine the recipe, keeping the same distillate but extending maturation from ten to twelve years.
The spirit is made from malted barley. Glenmorangie is famous for the tallest stills in Scotland – their necks reach the height of a fully grown giraffe, which the distillery has made its unofficial trademark. The whisky matures entirely in American oak ex-bourbon casks. Following the revamp, the minimum age was raised to at least 12 years; the single malt won a gold medal at the World Whiskies Awards 2024 even before its launch, and Lumsden and his team concluded that the move to 12 years brings extra silkiness, complexity and sweetness. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
On the nose, the expression reworked from 10 to 12 years opens with fresh, ripe orange and peach, followed by honey, vanilla custard, a spicy note of wood and exotic florality. On the palate, the backbone is lemon, vanilla, apricot, peach and orange, joined by cinnamon and banana bread. In the mouth the distillate is oily – just as in the previous version – but what comes next sounds rather different: the core of the flavour remains, yet the notes ring out more clearly than in the ten-year-old, leading with wild peach, vanilla, candied orange and syrup, with hints of toffee and a very subtle tartness in the background. The creamy texture and moderate strength allow you to roll the spirit around your mouth for a long time without any burning effect, so that successive layers unfold all the way to a medium, fruity finish.
The profile is unmistakably sweet and fruity. There is no peat here, no sticking-plaster notes, nothing maritime – it all revolves around sweet and fruity flavours. This is a Highland malt of light, elegant build, in which the two additional years in oak have noticeably filled out the flavour while preserving the brand's signature style. The set is completed by two glasses.
