Glenmorangie A Tale Of The Forest is a limited-edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the Highlands, the first in the distillery's portfolio made from malt dried over woodland botanicals. A Tale Of The Forest is the brand's first whisky created from malt dried over forest plants. Bottled at 46%, it is the third instalment in the "A Tale of" series, following A Tale of Cake and A Tale of Winter.

The idea was born out of experiments by Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie. Drying malt over botanicals was once a common practice, which Glenmorangie has revived after a series of experiments. Juniper berries, birch bark and heather flowers were used to dry the barley, along with a touch of peat. It is this treatment during malting, rather than any subsequent maturation or finishing, that defines the character of the bottle and sets it apart from the other releases in the series.

After distillation, the spirit was filled into ex-bourbon casks, largely refill casks, i.e. ones used more than once. The spirit distilled from this unusual malt matured in ex-bourbon casks, predominantly refill, so as not to overwhelm the character of the distillate. Such a choice of wood allows Glenmorangie's distillation core to be preserved without drowning out the aromas contributed by the malt.

The aromatic profile is led by notes of the forest floor. Woodland undergrowth takes the lead alongside oily pine and juniper, nutty malt and woody spice, with hints of smoke in the background. On the palate there is a range of crisp menthol and orange peel, accents of hibiscus and vanilla pod, against a backdrop of fennel, anise and smoked toffee; candied citrus fruits round it all off, while more pine and expressive barley intertwine with a gentle char of oak. According to the official tasting notes, the whisky envelops the senses with aromas of pine, juniper and coriander, threaded with wisps of smoke, followed by flavours of dark green eucalyptus brightened by bitter orange, descending into a slow, gently oaky finish.

This is a limited edition bearing an illustration by the artist Pomme Chan on the label and packaging. The artwork on the box and bottle was designed by the renowned artist Pomme Chan.
