Glenglassaugh Portsoy is a peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the distillery located in the Highlands, on Sandend Bay, close to the fishing town of Portsoy, from which it takes its name. Portsoy is a heavily peated single malt, named in honour of the harbour village neighbouring the seaside distillery.

The distillery has a long and interrupted history. It was built in 1875, founded by local merchant and entrepreneur James Moir together with his nephews, and Glenglassaugh lies between Sandend and Portsoy. After decades of silence, the distillery awoke once again in 2008, and production is led by master blender Rachel Barrie. Today it is one of the Scottish distilleries owned by the American group Brown-Forman, alongside GlenDronach and BenRiach.

Characteristic of this whisky is the work with peated malt used seasonally, along with triple maturation. Glenglassaugh uses peated malt only at certain times of the year. Maturation in a selection of sherry, bourbon and Port casks builds a distinctly smoky, maritime character with a wave of tropical fruit, salted liquorice, sticky soy sauce and chocolate. The influence of the Port casks is not a classic finish here, but rather one of the components of the flavour composition.

In the aromatic profile, peat intertwines with a note of the sea. Peat and sea salt appear immediately on the nose, underpinned by chocolate, vanilla, toffee and vegetal notes. On the palate the flavour is noticeably peatier than the nose, with woody and floral Highland-style peat, spices, pepper and cinnamon, biscuits, caramel, saltiness, liquorice, stewed plums and a mineral note. The finish is medium, with orchard fruit and red berries, sea breeze and a light floral note, closing with ashy peat.

Glenglassaugh consistently builds a sweet-and-salty, umami profile around Portsoy. In this smoky, peated spirit there resonates a sweet-salty umami note that draws out the coastal elements inspired by the distillery's location.
