Glenfiddich 31 Year Old Grand Château is a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, distinguished by a nine-year finish in red wine casks from Bordeaux. This 31-year-old single malt is the distillery's first release to make use of red wine casks from the iconic French region of Bordeaux, with the spirit maturing in them for nine years.

The whisky belongs to the Grand Series, a collection that brings together Scotch single malt with cultures and casks outside the distillery's traditional repertoire. Grand Château began life as a classic Glenfiddich single malt, maturing in American oak for 22 years, before being transferred into Bordeaux red wine casks for a further nine years. Nine years constitutes a full second maturation, not a brief finish. After a total of 31 years of maturation, the bottled whisky has a distinctive reddish hue. The edition was created in collaboration with French artist André Saraiva, whose artwork adorns the packaging.

The aromatic profile is dominated by vanilla, fruit and floral notes. On the nose, warm vanilla slowly reveals the fruity-floral notes of ripe blackcurrant along with spicy, nutty aromas; on the palate come slowly caramelised cherries and apples interwoven with warming spice and toasted oak. Independent tasting points to stewed pears, ripe plums and blackberries with a touch of candied cherries, followed by nutmeg, a light nutty sweetness and notes of cocoa and toasted brioche. The texture is silky, and the finish long and lingering.

The whisky is bottled at 47.6% ABV. After 22 years in ex-bourbon casks, the spirit rested for an additional nine years in Bordeaux red wine casks — a first for Glenfiddich, though the distillery does not disclose which château the casks came from. This is a limited and collectable release.
