Delaforce LBV 2017 is a Late Bottled Vintage Port from the Douro appellation in northern Portugal, made from a single vintage and bottled after several years of ageing in wood. The brand belongs to Real Companhia Velha, the oldest wine company in Portugal. Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal, with over 260 years of history producing Port, founded in 1756 by the then prime minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal.
The blend uses classic grape varieties of the Douro valley. Of the more than 30 varieties permitted for Port production, only some are planted in the Delaforce vineyards, among them Touriga Franca, Touriga nacional and Tinta Roriz. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-September and placed in small crates that keep them in good condition during transport to the winery. The fruit comes from parcels of old vines in the valleys of Rio Torto and Roncão in Cima Corgo.
Vinification is based on the traditional Port method – adding wine spirit to the fermenting must, which stops the fermentation and preserves the natural sugar. The wine is made through traditional fermentation in granite lagares, trodden by foot, and matures for 4 to 6 years in oak vats. The LBV is bottled after ageing in wood lasting up to six years, giving early softness and development; due to the longer ageing the wine is ready to drink without the need for decanting, unlike Vintage Port bottled after two years. The alcohol content is 20%.
In the glass it shows a deep, ruby colour. The LBV offers intense aromas of plums, fresh berries and liquorice, with a fruity palate and rounded tannins in a balanced structure. Wine Enthusiast awarded the wine 88 points, describing a deep ruby colour, aromas of plums, ripe fresh forest fruits and liquorice, and a fruity, jammy character with rounded tannins.
