Delaforce 10 Years Old Tawny is a Port from the Douro appellation in Portugal, a blend with an average age of ten years, built on the classic red grape varieties of the Douro valley. The brand belongs to Real Companhia Velha, and Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal, founded in 1756 by the then prime minister, the Marquis of Pombal.
The foundation of the blend consists of the classic red Douro varieties. The wine is composed of grapes such as Touriga nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto cão, Tinta barroca, and others. The Tawny character is the result of long ageing in wood. As Port wines mature in seasoned oak casks over many years, they gradually lose their original deep purple hue and take on a delicate amber shade known as Tawny. Port bearing an age indication is a blend of several vintages matured in selected oak casks, which impart the character typical of old tawnies; the older wines bring complexity and maturity, the younger ones freshness and vigour, and the result is a tawny with an average age of ten years.
The aromatic profile is dominated by a nutty, mature tone. This ten-year-old tawny has a nutty character with aromas of plums, dates, and notes of walnut and toffee; it is full and creamy, with a smooth texture and hints of caramel and dried fruits. On the palate it is semi-sweet, with a fruity finish and balancing acidity. Wine Enthusiast describes it similarly, rating the wine as well balanced between fruit and acidity, with ripe fruit cut through by acidity and the addition of wood ageing along with spice notes leading to a fresh finish.
As a wine aged in cask, tawny requires no further ageing in the bottle and is ready to drink. Desserts and cheeses make a good pairing. The producer recommends mild cheeses, custard, nut ice cream, apple pie, tarte tatin, and orange tart. Bottles are best stored lying down in a cool place, at a temperature of 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, away from direct light. The bottle presented has a capacity of 0.05 litres, and the wine's strength is 20%.
