Clynelish 12 Year Old is a Highland single malt from the Clynelish distillery in Brora, released as a limited edition as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2022 series. After initial maturation, the spirit underwent extended secondary ageing in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks, which shifts it away from the distillery's classic waxy signature towards sherry sweetness and peppery spice.
The base is the classic Clynelish distillate matured in ex-bourbon casks (refill American oak), followed by a finish in sherry casks. The whisky from the Special Releases 2022 series is double matured – after initial ageing it was transferred for two years into seasoned Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks. Bottling took place at cask strength. At 58.5% the spirit retains considerable intensity, and it was bottled without chill filtration and without colouring, in its natural form.
The aromatic profile combines fruit with spice. Creamy opening notes give way to light yet complex fruity and herbal aromas; subtle suggestions of fruity mincemeat, tinned pears and even heather honey, while deeper down a spicy oak scent hints at the intensity on the palate. On the palate, a smooth, mouth-filling texture introduces a lively flavour, rounded and wine-sweet, balanced by peppery oak spice. In the background there is peach with tropical and dried fruits, vanilla, orange peel and toffee, and the whole is strongly spicy – cardamom and chilli pepper.
The finish maintains the peppery tone. It is fairly long, chilli-spiced and appetisingly dry, with lingering pepper. The influence of the sherry casks is pronounced – sweet rum and walnut point to a large sherry contribution, while the characteristic Clynelish waxiness takes a back seat here. A drop of water opens the spirit up: it increases the herbal note while at the same time introducing that familiar waxy accent.
