Auchentoshan 18 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the Lowland region, embodying the gentle, elegant style typical of lowland Scotland. The Auchentoshan distillery lies at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills in western Scotland, near Glasgow, and is one of the last working distilleries in the Lowland region. Its name comes from Gaelic and is sometimes translated as "corner of the field".

The brand's distinguishing feature is triple distillation – a tradition Auchentoshan upholds as the only distillery in Scotland to consistently distil three times. While Scotch whisky is traditionally distilled twice, Auchentoshan distils three times — first in the wash still, then in the intermediate still, and finally in the spirit still. This additional stage yields an exceptionally clean, lighter and slightly sweeter spirit. The raw material is unpeated malted barley, and fermentation takes place in wooden washbacks made of Oregon pine.

After distillation, the whisky matures for over eighteen years. According to the producer's official description, this extended maturation takes place in casks. Thanks to the longer maturation in ex-Bourbon American oak casks and Spanish oak Oloroso sherry casks, everything is intensified, revealing deep, oaky notes. The whisky is bottled at 43%.

The aroma and flavour profile is dominated by Auchentoshan's signature smoothness. Pronounced notes of tobacco leaf and green tea lead to accents of blossoming flowers and sweet barley, with a citrus touch rounding off the finish. On the nose there is fresh tobacco leaf, followed by sweetness with a hint of caramelised sugar, green tea and toasted almonds. On the palate comes floral freshness with sweet barley sugar, which gently subsides to reveal a tangy mandarin note. The finish is long, lingering and well balanced.

Given its delicate, elegant structure, it is best served neat, without additions, allowing it a few moments in the glass to open up – it then reveals its layers of sweetness and spice more fully. It works well as a dram for quiet, evening contemplation, accompanied by vanilla- and caramel-based desserts, roasted nuts or mild cheeses.
