Auchentoshan 12 Year Old is a classic Lowland Single Malt with a mellow, elegant character, bottled at 40% ABV. Presented in a set with two dedicated glasses, it makes a convenient gift idea or a treat for your own quiet tastings.

The Auchentoshan distillery lies just outside Glasgow, at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills on the River Clyde, and has been operating since 1823. What sets this whisky apart is triple distillation: the third still, known as the "Intermediate Still", yields a spirit of as much as 81% ABV, which — combined with unmalted barley — gives Auchentoshan a gentler, sweeter profile than many Scotch whiskies. Unlike the traditional double distillation used in Scotland, here the spirit passes successively through the wash still, intermediate still and spirit still — a step that is time-consuming and costly, but produces an exceptionally clean spirit free of impurities.

The twelve-year-old edition undergoes dual maturation — in American oak ex-Bourbon casks and in Spanish ex-Oloroso sherry casks, which enriches it with a subtly fruity character. Production uses malted barley of the Optic variety, gently kilned and completely unpeated.

On the nose and palate, Auchentoshan 12 reveals its mellow, balanced nature. The nose offers notes of sweet pastry with a burst of citrus, a signature nuttiness and green, leafy freshness, while the palate is smooth, with sweet accents of vanilla and notes of hazelnut, tangerine and lime. Pronounced tones of sweet pastry and lemon peel intertwine with firmer oak, tangerine and lime, all rounded off by a sharp, gingery finish.

This whisky is best served neat or with a splash of water, which draws out deeper layers of citrus and vanilla. It also works well in cocktails such as a Whisky Sour or Rob Roy, and pairs nicely with mild cheeses, citrus desserts or roasted nuts.
