anCnoc 18 Years Old is a classic Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a full, mature structure, bottled at 46% ABV. The anCnoc brand, whose Gaelic name means "the hill", comes from the Knockdhu distillery in Banffshire — it was adopted to avoid confusion with the similar-sounding Knockando.

The Knockdhu distillery was founded in 1894 by John Morrison and, at the time it was built, was regarded as the most modern and best-equipped distillery of its day. It is one of the few Scottish distilleries whose single malt does not bear the name of the plant, but a separate brand — anCnoc. According to Whisky Advocate, only around 20% of Knockdhu's production goes into anCnoc single malt, with the rest feeding blends.

The 18-year-old expression, introduced in the second half of 2014, matured in a combination of Spanish oak ex-sherry casks and American oak ex-bourbon casks. After maturation, the whisky is bottled in its most natural form — non-chill filtered and with no added colouring. For this reason the spirit may turn slightly hazy when water is added or at low temperatures, which is a natural characteristic of non-chill filtered whisky.

In colour it presents as brownish amber. On the nose there are delicate spices and an intense sweetness of dried fruit, complemented by chocolate, ripe oranges and oiled leather. On the palate it is full and expressive — aromatic spices, fruitcake and candied lemon give way to a wave of vanilla, honey and caramel. The finish moves from peppery and hot to delightfully sweet and velvety. Whisky Advocate awarded this expression 92 points, describing it as florally perfumed, with aromas of lemon peel and peach and a silkily sweet palate.

It tastes best neat, without any additions, or with a few drops of water, which open up the fruity character of the sherry casks. As a pairing, it works well with a board of mature cheeses, dark chocolate or a nut tart. The spirit is non-chill filtered and free of artificial colouring, which underlines its natural, craft character.
