1800 Añejo is an añejo category tequila from Jalisco, Mexico, produced exclusively from 100% blue Weber agave and matured in new American and French oak barrels. In the 1970s, when Mexico formally obtained the denomination of origin for tequila, Juan Beckmann Vidal launched 1800 Añejo – the first official 100% agave añejo tequila. The brand's name refers to the year in which the Beckmann family – descendants of one of the oldest families associated with tequila – first placed tequila in barrels.

The foundation is blue Weber agave harvested at peak maturity. The agave is steamed in traditional brick ovens, and after fermentation it undergoes double distillation in copper pot stills. The distillate then matures in new American and French oak barrels for over a year. The use of fresh, previously unused oak sets this tequila apart from many añejos aged in ex-bourbon barrels. This version is bottled at 38% ABV.

The aroma and flavour profile is dominated by the influence of oak intertwined with the character of roasted agave. The colour is coppery amber, and the nose brings toasted coconut, toffee with a hint of apple, and a cigar box with spicy-woody and perfumed accents; on the palate there is wood and spiciness, an abundance of dried fruit and nuts, caramel, chocolate and roasted agave. The producer describes this dark amber spirit as oaky and vanilla-driven on the nose, nutty with a hint of toffee on the palate, with a peppery, spicy finish.

It is worth noting that añejo is by definition a tequila aged longer than its younger counterparts. The añejo designation in the 1800 portfolio refers to tequila matured for twelve to sixteen months in oak barrels with a capacity not exceeding 600 litres. This time in wood softens the sharpness of the spirit and builds a layer of spicy, sweet notes while preserving a discernible agave character.
