A Grand Cru Classé of the Saint-Émilion appellation, one of the pioneers of biodynamics in Bordeaux. The vineyard – 17.6 ha in a single block – lies a few hundred metres north-west of the medieval town of Saint-Émilion and spreads across three soil types: the limestone plateau (the historic heart of the appellation, home to almost all the premiers grands crus), a clay-limestone slope with a western exposure, and sandy-clay soils at the foot of the hill. Plantings are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The estate was bought in 1931 by Adèle and Jean Moueix; their great-grandson Alain Moueix, an agricultural engineer and oenologist, has run it since 2001 and immediately introduced organic and then biodynamic farming – thanks to which Fonroque became the first Grand Cru Classé with biodynamic certification.
Since July 2017 the property has belonged to the Guillard family, for whom biodynamics was the key argument for the purchase; Alain Moueix has remained at the helm. A new winery with a series of small vats makes it possible to vinify each soil type separately. The wines are renowned for their limestone freshness and energy.
